Context of the News:

Recently, National Thermal Power Corporation Ltd was awarded the country's first green hydrogen microgrid project at the Simhadri (near Visakhapatnam) plant in Andhra Pradesh.

Key points of the Project:

  • This unique project structure is developed in-house by NTPC.
  • This will usher in a large hydrogen energy storage project.
  • This is in line with India's vision of becoming climate neutral by 2070.
  • Hydrogen is produced in an advanced 240kW solid oxide electrolytic cell by drawing power from a nearby floating solar project.
Previously, NTPC commissioned the development of India's most extensive floating solar system at Ramagundam in Telangana. The hydrogen produced during the day is stored under high pressure and charged in a 50kW solid oxide fuel cell.

Importance of the Project:

Helpful when providing multiple microgrids. This Project will help further research and deploy multiple microgrids at various off-grid and strategic locations across the country. Pure power development is an essential weapon against climate change and limits its catastrophic impact.

An open perspective on decarbonization:

  • This opens up the prospect of decarbonization of remote areas such as Ladakh and J & K, which rely on diesel generators.
  • Decarbonization means removing or reducing the number of gaseous carbon compounds released into the environment.
  • NTPC Renewable Energy Limited (NTPC REL) has also signed a contract with the Federal Territory of Ladakh on the Green Hydrogen Mobility Project.

Energy security:

  • Hydrogen as a fuel could be an important factor in India's energy security, which imports 85% of oil and 53% of gas.
  • To promote clean fuels, India is considering mandating fertilizer plants and oil refineries to buy green hydrogen.
  • NTPC is also trying to use hydrogen for transportation by mixing fuel and natural gas for the City Gas Distribution (CGD) network.

Indian Railways has announced the first domestic experiment using a train based on hydrogen fuel cell technology by modifying an existing diesel engine. It aims to install a 100GW grid-connected solar power plant by 2022.

Brown Hydrogen:
