NASA plans on launching a space telescope that will traverse the universe in more detail than ever built. The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) took 30 years and $ 10 billion ( 7.5 billion) to complete and is recognized as one of the most tremendous scientific efforts of the century.

What is the purpose of this James Webb Space Telescope?

The telescope can see almost everything in the sky. But its primary goal is to illuminate the light of the first star in the universe. These pioneering stars have been switched on about 100 million years or 13.5 billion years after the Big Bang.
Webb selects a group of these stars. Because they are so distant, their light travels at 300,000 km / s (186,000 miles), but it took billions of years to cross the universe. Webb should be able to see (or at least see a faint glow) the moment the darkness is over and those first stars come back to life. The mirror will be one of the essential parts of the telescope.

Why do you want to see the first star?

When the universe appeared in the Big Bang, it contained only three chemical elements: hydrogen, helium, and a small amount of lithium.
All other chemical elements, including fundamental elements such as carbon and oxygen, had to be forged or "manufactured" by a nuclear reaction at the centre of the star. As a result, Webb helps us understand the origin of everything around us and how we have become.

How is James Webb Space Telescope different from existing space telescopes?

First, it is much larger than the Hubble Telescope, which has orbited Earth since 1990. Hubble collects light with a 2.4m (7.8ft) primary mirror, while Webb has a 6.5m diameter primary mirror. The James Webb Space Telescope will be about the same size as a tennis court with all other accessories. Unfortunately, it's so big that you need to fold it to fit in the launcher.
But the critical thing about Webb is that Hubble is tuned to sense light that cannot be seen with infrared light. This radiation is invisible to the eye; nevertheless, it is the type of light that shows the brilliance of the furthest objects in the universe.
Named after James E. Webb, who currently oversees NASA's lunar landing project, Webb will be on track on Wednesday, December 22nd. The European Space Agency is a project partner and has agreed to launch Webb into space. The James Webb Space Telescope is the most valuable payload ever carried by Ariane. Fortunately, missiles have a reputation for being extremely reliable. The rocket throws a telescope about 1 million miles (1.6 million kilometres) from Earth. At this distance, we can make observations that lack the occasional shadow effects that we would experience if we operated near our world.

Can Astronauts Operate Webb?

FNo, it's too far from Earth for astronauts to reach. The Webb has a fuel supply designed to remain stable for ten years in orbit. It is not excluded that the robot may refill the fuel tank at some point in the future, but the outlook is currently unplanned.

The European Space Agency has invested around 700 million (590 million) in this project, contributing to two of Webb's four devices and providing the Ariane launcher. The Canadian Space Agency (CSA) also provides approximately $ 200 million (120 million).
Indeed, Webb is years behind schedule and project management can be inadequate. However, some of the money was spent on technological developments found elsewhere to be more versatile. For example, measurement tools developed for Webb are currently used in precision eye surgery.
