Topper Story - GAMINI SINGLA Background

Gamini Singla, 23, secured 3rd position in the Civil Services examination 2021 when Commission declared the result on 30th May 2022. She is an alumnus of Punjab Engineering College (PEC) Chandigarh and completed her Bachelor of Engineering in Computer Science (CSE) branch. Gamini Single is a native of Sunam but currently living in Anandpur Sahib in Punjab. To become an IAS officer is a childhood dream of Gamini, and they started preparing for the UPSC exam in 2020. She Didn't join coaching class to crack the exam and is confident that exams can clear if you are mentally strong and consistently put the effort in the right direction. Gamini's family supported them throughout her UPSC journey and motivated her; even her father used to read the newspaper so that she could cover current affairs daily, which also saved her time. She usually discussed with her father issues ranging from national importance to international affairs, policy issues, and economics, and this helped her to gain solid fundamentals and command of the subject. Ankita's father also used to read books for support, guidance, and discussion.

Her Father's name is Dr. Alok Single, and he is a medical officer. Her mother, Dr. Neeraj, also a medical officer in Himachal Pradesh Government, and her brother Tushar Singla completed B. Tech from IIT Kharagpur. Gamini is a hard-working student, and she got the job during campus placement. Still, her goal was to clear UPSC and contribute to the country's growth and eliminate problems that society is currently facing. Gamini chose sociology as the optional subject for the UPSC exam.

Gamini Single cleared the UPSC exam in her 2nd attempt; she cleared the prelims exam in her 1st attempt but failed to clear UPSC mains. Gamini, along with Shruti Sharma and Ankita Agarwal, secured all top three positions 1st time in the history of the UPSC exam.

Gamini Singla wanted to work for Gender equality and social justice, especially for 50% of the population. As per Gamini, women are not less than men, and they are capable of achieving anything through their hard work, devotion, patience, and dedication. Gamini wants that women must play their role in the development of the country and the welfare of the people. 

Gamini usually studies for 9-10 hours a day, and she took guidance in Patiala. She believes that you can crack the UPSC exam without any coaching, and that is why most of the time, she did self-study for the examination. For UPSC aspirants, consistency is the key mantra to get success.

Union Public Service Commission announced the result for the Civil Service exam 2021 on 30 May 2022, and a total of 685 students recommend by the commission this year. 180 candidates out of 685 were selected for IAS, 37 for IFS, and 200 for IPS. If we consider this list released by the commission, we find that 242 candidates were selected for Group A services, and 90 aspirants have been selected for Group B Services. Out of the total 685 candidates, 244 are from the General category. Rest candidates are 73, 203, 105, and 60 from Economical Weaker Sections, Other Backward Classes, Scheduled Castes, and Scheduled Tribes, respectively.

The Commission conducts examinations annually in 3 stages preliminary, main, and interview to select officers of the:

1. Indian Administrative Service (IAS), 

2. Indian Foreign Service (IFS) and 

3. Indian Police Service (IPS), among others.

The 2nd stage or mains part of the examination of 2021 was conducted in January 2022 (postponed due to COVID), and the interviews were held in April and May this year.

Gamini was an allrounder since childhood and not indulged only in study but participated in co-curricular activities during her college. Gamini's hobby is participating in MUN. MUN club activities are important elements of sustaining a Model United Nations (MUN) team or group while putting in place a positive club atmosphere. These activities help nurture the skills Model United Nations (MUN) teaches and work well besides MUN theory lectures and simulations. Gamini also participated in various All India Political Party meetings and was also chosen as the Director-General of the PECMUN 6.0 in 2019.

Gamini's favorite sociological thinker is Émile Durkheim, who was a French Sociologist. One answer is given by her during the interview that she doesn't know how to drive a vehicle. Gamini is an admirer of Kiran Bedi and Navjot Simmi because of their confidence, attitude, and commitment as IPS officers during duties. She considers both of her role models
